Senate president, Bukola Saraki last night took to his Twitter handle to say he spoke with president Buhari and they joked about him working late.

FG Increases Saraki's Charges From 16 To 18, Case Adjourned To February 23

The Nigerian government has applied for an amendment of the 16 count criminal charge leveled against Senate president, Bukola Saraki, before the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, in Abuja on Wednesday.

The CCT panel permitted Saraki to enter his plea to the fresh charge by 1:30pm.

Dr. Saraki was docked before the CCT on September 22, 2015, on a 13-count charge and latter re-arraigned on April 28, 2016, on an amended 16-count corruption charge.

FG alleged that he made false/anticipatory declaration of assets, operated foreign accounts while in office as Kwara State governor between 2003 and 2011, as well as collected governorship salary four years after his tenure had elapsed. FG had earlier called two witnesses that testified against the defendant before the tribunal.

At the resumed hearing of the case on Wednesday, Justice Umar stood-down the proceeding to record Saraki’s fresh plea. The development came shortly after the third prosecution witness, Pw-3, Mr. Samuel Madujemu narrated how FG uncovered discrepancies in assets the defendant declared to the Code of Conduct Bureau, CCB.

The witness is the Chief Admin Officer at the CCB.

He was the head of investigation Division under the Department of Intelligence, Investigation and Monitoring, that joined the EFCC to probe Saraki’s assets.

Madujemu told the tribunal that Saraki made his first assets declaration on September 16, 2003, upon his assumption of office. He told the tribunal that a joint investigative team involving the CCB, Federal Ministry of Justice and the EFCC, discovered that Saraki falsely declared his assets.

He said: ” After we discovered that there were some discrepancies, we commenced further investigations into the matter. One of the discrepancies we discovered had to do with false declaration and none declaration of some assets and some liabilities.”

The witness said he was not aware that the CCB initially verified Saraki’s assets before EFCC tendered preliminary report that ignited the joint investigation. He told the tribunal that Saraki under-declared some assets he acquired in 2006. For instance, he told the tribunal that Saraki declared two properties he bought in Lagos and left out two others.

But reading from one of the assets declaration forms marked as exhibit-3, the witness said: “My lord what I see here is No17a and 17b Mc Donald Street Ikoyi which the defendant acquired with a bank loan in 2006. “No 15a and 15b Mc Donald Ikoyi which he also acquired in 2006 was not included in the assets he declared.”

Saraki allegedly acquired the properties with N265m. The witness was at the verge of revealing more alleged discrepancies in assets the Senate President declared, when head of the defence team, Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, drew attention of the tribunal to the amended charge against his client. “My lord I think we should at this juncture bring to your notice the fact that we were served with an amended charge this morning.

“You cannot proceed further in th matter until the defendant pleads to that amended charge. “My lord the defendant is psychologically affected by this amended charge and is desirous to enter his plea. “At this stage the defendant must plead to it before we proceed further on this matter. If it is not serious then the prosecution should withdraw it,” Agabi submitted.

Responding, the prosecution counsel, Mr. Rotimi Jacobs (SAN) said he did not raise the issue so as not to disrupt proceeding of the day. “My lord amendment can be done anytime even after their own defence, before judgment is delivered. “Moreover we are not bringing anything new. The new charge is just the old wine in a new bottle”, Jacobs argued. Though the tribunal panel observed that they were yet to receive a copy of the amended charge, Justice Umar said he was willing to stand-down the matter for one hour.

“Chief Agabi remember that Rotimi is your son”, the tribunal Chairman, Justice Umar jokingly remarked. “No my lord, Rotimi is now a bad son”, Agabi responded. Saraki will now face an amended 18-count charge.

As lawyers, women groups, raise alarm on emerging patterns that threaten Nigeria's Democracy

Thousands of protesting lawyers, civil society group led by their coordinator Barr.Agu Okwukwe yesterday marched the Streets of Abuja against the growing excesses of the DG SSS, the gradual destruction of Nigerian democracy, abuse of human rights/institutions of governance, detention of citizens/journalists and the shameful attempts to destabilise Rivers State by the DSS/POLICE .The lawyers want DG SSS SACKED, release of their detained four members & disband Police Rivers Re-run Panel.

The protesting lawyers and activists who marched to various embassies and Human Right Commission in Abuja in a peaceful manner after their first attempt to hold their march was illegally disrupted by the DSS on a baseless ground late December said their march was to stand up against the plot to overthrow the Nigerian democracy by the DG SSS and install a reign of fear and intimidation.

The lawyers under the name of Lawyers in Defence of Democracy called on the DG SSS to release their four members from their illegal underground detention facilities where they are currently holding Comrade UGO APUMAGA, IKENGA IMO UGOCHINYERE,EMEKA DIBAI & EJIKE whose sick brother died because of lack of money to take him to hospital.

The group also called on the House of Reps to set up a probe panel to investigate the continuous rape of the Nigerian Constitution/judicial decisions by the DG SSS and the role of the shameful Nigeria Police in the Rivers Re-Run.

The protesting lawyers marched through major streets in Abuja and visited the National Human Right Commission, US, UK Embassies, EU Commision etc where they submitted their petition against the growing culture of impunity led by the DG SSS

The summary of the demand of the protesters:

It is based on the fore going that we lawyers in defence of democracy and citizens for good governance state the following:

i.) We call for the immediate release of our members who have been in DSS detention for over a month and a return of all property taken away from our office.

ii.) We salute the gallantry of Rivers people led by Governor Wike. The will of the people of Rivers State triumphed over the rampaging forces fully backed and funded by Abuja. The gallantry of Rivers people is commended and must be emulated by the peoples of every city and state. We are in solidarity with the people of Rivers state.

iii.) That the refusal of the Nigerian Police Force to arrest the officers who participated in this dastardly act of brazen election rigging is shocking. 

iv.) That the refusal of the Police to arrest and prosecute Mr. Akin Fakorede, the SARS Commandant marks the official driving of a nail through the heart of our democracy and endorsement of the end of free and fair election in our country.

v.) That the sack of the six police officers without regard to due process is selective, condemnable, ludicrous and in very bad taste.

vi.) That all politicians who have been known to have been involved in the mayhem in Rivers State be arrested immediately including Rotimi Amechi, Magnus Abe and Dakuku Peterside.

vii.) That the probe panel set up by the Inspector General of Police is unconstitutional, laughable, and ridiculous. It is a black market attempt to continue the conquest of the territory called Rivers State. The same Police that have not taken any action against those who printed fake INEC materials or apprehended those who rigged the elections are now probing a fake concocted audio tape.

viii.) We demand the immediate disbandment of the probe panel set up by the Inspector General of Police and hail the Judicial Commission set up by the Rivers State Government. Rivers people are urged to gather their facts and appear before the Judicial Commission to help it unravel the truth of what happened on 10th December, 2016.

Remember, less than 3 months before this demise of Ooni Sijuwade, it was revealed to me and I told people during a revival program held in Ile-Ife “that the most powerful of Ile-Ife was going”.

22. Their will be leadership tussle in APC that will be later resolved, lets pray for peace.

23. To the Glory of God, I predicted the Election of 26 states in the last Election and it came to pass. The record is their. I also predicted those that will win primary Election and Who will emerge winner in both Oyo and Lagos State and it came to pass.

More Governor will loose their re Election.

24. As regard Niger Delta having country of their own is not yet, any attempt towards it will fail totally . Although Nigeria will still dis – integrated.

25. No end to terrorism in Nigeria and the whole world for now it will only increase World wide

31. If Atiku Abubarkar did not die and want to become president in Nigeria, he will need to bow down for God and masses and he must go and apologies to all former presidents, other wise he may never become president in Nigeria.

32. Bukola Saraki will overcome all his challenges after serious battle. His political enemies will negotiate with him, but he needs prayer against sickness.
