The Jigawa House of Assembly on Tuesday impeached its Speaker, Alhaji Idris Garba and elected Alhaji Isa Idris of Gwaram Constituency as the new Speaker.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Deputy Speaker, Alhaji Ahmed Garba presided over the sitting attended by 23 members.
NAN reports that the Clerk of the house, Alhaji Hussaini Ali earlier announced that he received an impeachment notice signed by 25 of the 30 assembly members, and which he read on the floor of the house.
Ali disclosed that members of the assembly impeached the speaker due to alleged high-handedness and abuse of power.
The Deputy Speaker read the impeachment notice on the floor of the house and confirmed the number of members that signed the notice.
Garba said that 25 of the 30-member assembly that endorsed the impeachment notice showed that it met the constitutional requirement of two third to impeach any of its principal officers.
“With this development, I hereby declare the seat of the Speaker vacant and a fresh election should be conducted to elect the new speaker,” he said.
NAN reports that two members– Alhaji Isa Dutse of Dutse Municipal constituency and Isa Idris of Gwaram constituency– were nominated for the election to replace the impeached Speaker.
Isa Idris, however, defeated Isa Dutse with 12 to six votes, while five members were indifferent.
In his acceptance Speech, the new Speaker promised to run an open door policy and solicited members support and cooperation.
A 34-year-old spare parts dealer has been arrested by anti-narcotics agents with 9.150kg of cocaine, which were concealed in the soles of foot wears being imported into the country.
The arrest of the Enugu State-born man, identified as Okolo Emenike, was made at the weekend, during the inward screening of passengers on a Turkish airline flight from Brazil, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Commander at the Abuja Airport, Hamisu Lawan, explained that the discovery of the drugs, with an estimated value of about a Billion Naira, was the last arrest made in year 2016.
Lawan said: “The discovery was made in a shipment of shoes during inward screening of passengers on a Turkish airline flight from Sao Paulo, Brazil. The cocaine was industrially concealed in the soles of new foot wears.”
His story
During interrogation, Okolo, a father of one, disclosed that he was offered N1million to smuggle the drugs into Nigeria. He explained that he was forced to leave the shores of Nigeria for Brazil in search of greener pastures, when his business was experiencing a down turn, owing to recession.
However, on reaching Brazil, Okolo said, “things became worse for me as I could not get a job. I had no money to sustain myself while my work permit was being processed.
“I was equally confronted with the fear of deportation. This made me desperate for quick wealth. In the process, I met my childhood friend, who offered me N1million to traffic cocaine to Nigeria.
“He also paid for my ticket and gave me three bags of shoes containing the cocaine. But on arrival at the Abuja airport, the cocaine was detected and I was arrested. I had wanted to invest money offered to me in my business that failed due to recession.”
NDLEA boss said this year will be even hotter for people who are living large and destroying other people’s lives with illicit drugs.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has put Patience Jonathan’s cousin, Esther Oba, on its watch list after it was discovered that she (Oba) is being used as a front for the ex-first lady’s N9 billion bank accounts.
According to Punch, citing an EFCC source, the anti-graft agency began investigating Oba after identifying her as one of the owners of the accounts bearing the signature of Mrs Jonathan.
The EFCC said the accounts had Oba’s Bank Verification Number (BVN) but carry Patience’s signature.
Oba also allegedly possesses two valid Nigerian passports which bear the same name, picture but signatures. The source was quoted as saying:
“After we froze Patience Jonathan’s accounts a few months ago, we continued to investigate the former First Lady. We then stumbled on some accounts, which did not bear her name but had her signature. “We realised that one Esther Oba, who we believe is Patience’s cousin, had been operating some accounts for her. The accounts had Oba’s BVN but carried Patience’s signature. So we began investigating Oba.
“Immigration confirmed that the two passports are indeed valid. They bear the same name, picture and details but different signature. So, they have also launched an investigation into the matter. Obviously this is a case of fraud”.
A pilot who allegedly passed out in the cockpit of a Boeing 737 in Canada was arrested on suspicion of being drunk, police said.
Capt. Miroslav Gronych was "behaving oddly before he became unconscious in the cockpit" on Saturday, Calgary police said. The plane, with 99 passengers and six crew members, was scheduled to fly to Regina before heading to Winnipeg and Cancun, Mexico.
Gronych, a 37-year-old Slovak national in Canada on a work visa, was charged with having control of an aircraft while impaired.
"Initial tests conducted by police indicate the pilot was severely impaired by alcohol," police said in a statement.
Two hours after his arrest, the pilot's blood alcohol level was three times the legal limit of .08, Calgary police spokesman Staff Sgt. Paul Stacey said, according to CNN partner CBC News.
"It had all the potential for a disaster, but I'll tell you this much -- the likelihood of a pilot on a major airline like this actually being able to take off when they're impaired like that is pretty slim, because there's a lot of checks and balances," Stacey said. "There's the other flight crew and there's gate crew and they're all about safety."
The gate crew noticed Gronych acting strangely and told the co-pilot, who found Gronych passed out in the pilot's seat, Stacey said.
Budget airline Sunwing apologized for their pilot's behavior and commended the rest of the crew for their diligence in handling what they described as a "very unfortunate matter."
Sunwing said the plane took off a short time later with a different pilot.
Stacey said Transport Canada will investigate, and more charges could apply. "He won't be flying anytime soon."
